What Is A Shoulder Ultrasound Scan?

Shoulder Scan Examination

A Shoulder Ultrasound examines the soft tissues and superficial bony contours of the shoulder joint, evaluating:

  • Rotator cuff tendons (Supraspinatus, Infraspinatus, Subscapularis)
  • Biceps tendon (long head) & tendon sheath fluid
  • Subacromial-subdeltoid bursa inflammation
  • Acromioclavicular (AC) joint arthrosis or effusion
  • Dynamic impingement during arm abduction

A Shoulder Ultrasound is the gold standard for dynamic, real-time imaging of rotator cuff pathology. Unlike MRI, ultrasound allows the clinician to move your shoulder while scanning to observe tendon impingement, subluxation, or snapping directly as it happens.

Whether you suffer from a sports injury, gradual painful arc, or difficulty lifting your arm overhead, this scan pinpoints the precise cause of soft tissue dysfunction, guiding targeted physiotherapy or injections.

A Shoulder Scan delivers instant visual diagnostic accuracy for rotator cuff tears, bursitis, and impingement without claustrophobia or radiation.

FAQ

Ultrasound provides equal accuracy to MRI for detecting rotator cuff tears and bursitis, with the added benefit of dynamic real-time movement evaluation.

If pain or injury is limited to one side, a Unilateral scan (£90) is sufficient. If you experience symptoms in both shoulders, or wish to compare a symptomatic shoulder against your normal non-painful side, select a Bilateral scan (£160).

No referral is needed. You can self-refer for a private shoulder scan directly through our clinic booking system.

Wear a comfortable loose top or tank top so your shoulder and upper arm can be easily exposed.

We do not provide printed or written reports. All ultrasound reports are delivered digitally via the patient portal and to the registered email address within 24 hours of the scan. If an emergency report is required, it can be provided within 2 hours.
