What Is A Fertility Scan?

Specialist Ultrasound Consultation

A Fertility Ultrasound provides a detailed examination of female pelvic anatomy, evaluating:

  • Antral Follicle Count (AFC) per ovary
  • Endometrial lining thickness & pattern
  • Uterine structure, fibroids, or polyps
  • Ovarian volume & polycystic appearance (PCOS)
  • Presence of ovarian cysts or hydrosalpinx

A Fertility Scan is a specialized ultrasound procedure designed to evaluate the physiological readiness of the female reproductive system for pregnancy. Primarily performed transvaginally for optimal acoustic clarity, this examination provides essential diagnostic data for women planning pregnancy naturally or preparing for assisted reproductive technology (ART) such as IVF, IUI, or egg freezing.

During the procedure, our specialist sonographer measures the endometrial lining, counts resting antral follicles in both ovaries to gauge ovarian reserve, and checks for structural anomalies (such as uterine fibroids, endometrial polyps, or adenomyosis) that could impair embryo implantation.

A Fertility Scan delivers critical insights into egg reserve, uterine lining health, and reproductive anatomy necessary for conception planning and fertility treatments.

FAQ

For baseline assessment and Antral Follicle Counting, the scan is ideally performed between Day 2 and Day 5 of your menstrual cycle.

A transvaginal approach provides much higher resolution images of the ovaries and endometrium. However, an internal scan can be performed transabdominally if preferred.

Yes, our clinical reports strictly adhere to UK fertility guidelines and can be forwarded directly to your chosen clinic.

If having a transvaginal scan, an empty bladder is required. For a transabdominal scan, a full bladder is necessary.
