What Is A Hip Ultrasound Scan?
A Hip Ultrasound evaluates extra-articular soft tissue structures surrounding the hip joint, assessing:
- Greater trochanteric pain syndrome (GTPS)
- Gluteus medius & minimus tendon tears or tendinopathy
- Trochanteric & subgluteus bursitis
- Anterior hip joint effusion (fluid excess)
- Iliopsoas tendonitis or snapping hip phenomenon
Outer hip pain is frequently misdiagnosed as hip osteoarthritis when it is actually caused by gluteal tendinopathy or bursitis. Ultrasound is the ideal imaging method for isolating these soft tissue structures around the greater trochanter.
By evaluating tendon fibers and bursa thickness in real-time, our sonographers provide clear answers that help tailor physiotherapy, load management, or guided injections.
A Hip Ultrasound provides quick, clear differentiation between hip bursitis, gluteal tendon tears, and joint fluid accumulation.
Symptoms Requiring A Hip Scan

FAQ
Ultrasound shows joint fluid accumulation and bony surface irregularities, though X-ray is often combined for deep bony joint space assessment.
If pain or symptoms affect only one hip, a Unilateral scan (£90) is sufficient. If you experience symptoms in both hips or wish to compare against your normal side, select a Bilateral scan (£160).
Yes, ultrasound is highly effective at identifying bursal fluid, wall thickening, and underlying gluteal tendon tears.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing (such as shorts or loose trousers) that allows easy access to the hip area.
No referral is needed. You can self-refer for a private hip scan directly through our clinic booking system.
